Masterworks mucha 2016 mini calendar1/17/2024 ![]() There is also no index in the back that lists every painting, which I thought would be standard in an art book like this. There is no rhyme or rhythm to how the featured artwork is organized, and images are sometimes 100+ pages away from the page they're mentioned and described. Unfortunately, the paintings described were almost never on the same or adjacent pages, so you'd get descriptions like "His most famous painting, XYZ (see page 130) was closely related to painting ABC (see page 15)." and have to flip back and forth between description and painting. ![]() ![]() The first half was a detailed biography of the Alphonse Mucha's life and career, while the second half described, in great detail, many of his famous paintings. I was beyond frustrated with this gorgeous book. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU PUBLISH AN ART BOOK WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF PAINTINGS AND NOT PUT THE PAINTINGS ON THE SAME PAGE AS THE DESCRIPTIONS? And although viewing these paintings in a reduced size does not do them justice at all and the accompanying texts are mostly unnecessary, this book still is a feast of gorgeous, dreamy colors and flowing forms. They're all in Alphonse Mucha by Rosalind Ormiston. During his life however, he created some of what I consider to be beautiful examples of the Jugendstil. Although he was released before his death, according to rumors the turn of events had weakened the aging artist considerably. He died in Prague in 1939 due to pneumonia, shortly after German troops moved into Czechoslovakia and he was arrested by the Gestapo. I’m so very fond of it!Īnd of course this art style is inextricably linked to the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. Instead, Jugendstil feels like an ode to the imagination, to the beauty of nature and to romance. If I remember correctly - and chances are that I don’t - Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) was born during the peak of the Impressionism, mostly as a response to the increase of mass production and industrialism and the "ugliness" of the thereby inspired art and architecture. It is an ideal read for those with little knowledge of Mucha as well as those looking to learn more. The informative text goes hand-in-hand with stunning reproductions of Mucha's most stirring and iconic works, from his "Gismonda" poster of 1894 to his "The Moon and the Stars" series of decorative panels of 1902.įeaturing over 150 of his most important graphic works, Alphonse Mucha: Masterworks is the perfect gateway to learning more about this versatile artist - one who was truly successful in producing both commercial pieces and 'high art'. Exploring his many decorative panels and commercial posters as well as his illustrations for books and magazines, it takes an in-depth look at his changing artistic styles of the period and reveals his sources of inspiration. Next, beginning with his earliest Parisian posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, the second half of the book focuses on Mucha's most intense period of productivity in Paris, and documents his success as an avant-garde artist. From his early family life in Ivancice right through to his final days in Prague, it delves into every aspect of his career as it developed. Telling the story of a man who was to dazzle the commercial world, the first half of the book explores how he achieved such success. We are proud to share that the second season will include the following advancements from the inaugural season: Initially founded out of a need to gain solo experience with an ensemble, Mini Masterworks has grown into something much bigger than us. For those just joining this journey, Mini Masterworks is a performance series that takes large orchestral works “out of the concert hall and into the living room.” By reducing these works to an ensemble of just 8 musicians, we are able to perform them anywhere in NYC, not just at venues with a large stage. Anthime Miller and Sam Gray are elated to announce the second season of Mini Masterworks.
